At a Madrid rally, PSOE, Sumar and IU deputies and unions called Sheinbaum a 'beacon of light' and denounced a '21st-century Monroe Doctrine.'

Madrid. In the face of the latent threat of interference from the far right, led by the United States and its president, Donald Trump, the Spanish left held an event of support and solidarity with threatened peoples and, in particular, with Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, whom they described as a “beacon of light” amid the darkness the world is living through.

The event, held in the “Las 13 Rosas” auditorium at the Comisiones Obreras headquarters in Madrid, also served to denounce the merciless attack the Cuban people are suffering and the political interference in Colombia’s recent elections, always under that new umbrella of the “21st-century Monroe Doctrine.”

Deputy Luisa García, of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and also the spokesperson for the Congress’s International Policy Commission, warned of the siren songs of populist leaders in the style of Bukele or Javier Milei, who denigrate at the root the democratic processes of transformation. She therefore highlighted the political project that began in Mexico with Morena’s victory, led first by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and now by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“The current Trump administration has revived the Monroe Doctrine, as was demonstrated in the intervention in Venezuela, the enormous and inhuman pressures on Cuba, the tariffs on Brazil, the explicit support for Bukele, and the interference in electoral processes such as Peru and Colombia. That is why I do not want to forget the way in which Mexico, in the figure of its president Claudia Sheinbaum, is being attacked by the international far right, including the Spanish one, in an exercise of destabilization and misogyny without precedent. President Sheinbaum’s mandate is backed by more than 32 million votes from Mexican men and women who support her fight against poverty and exclusion. From the socialist parliamentary group, we can do no less than express our support for the Mexican people and President Sheinbaum.”

Verónica Martínez Barbero, a deputy from the Sumar group, added in her remarks that “there are moments in history when events in different countries stop being isolated episodes and begin to sketch a single map. And that is what is happening in Latin America. We see it in Mexico, we are living it in Brazil, we are living it in Colombia, in Peru, and in Uruguay. Every time the democratic majority decides to use institutions to redistribute wealth, to think of those who have the least, to expand rights or recover public control over strategic sectors of the economy, an organized reaction appears that seeks to limit that capacity to decide.

“Because we are not facing the sum of national crises. We are facing an international dispute, and one of the clearest examples of this dispute is the figure of President Claudia Sheinbaum, because she was ratified by a broad social majority and because her political project claims a greater capacity of the state to combat inequality, to strengthen public services, even an industrial policy of its own, and ultimately to defend national security against external interests.“

Enrique Santiago, a deputy from Izquierda Unida (IU), recalled the “harassed and intervened peoples,” such as the “Cuban people, who are in a situation of genuine genocide, of a crime against humanity, and who, despite everything, are resisting.” He also highlighted “the Mexican people and their President, who, without any doubt, with an intelligence far above normal and far greater than that of Mr. Trump, is demonstrating that she is capable of resisting and advancing in the face of the tremendous economic and political pressures, even threats of U.S. military intervention on Mexican territory, always under the excuse of combating drug trafficking.”

The unions Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and the Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT), represented by Félix Ovejero and Jesús Gallego respectively, also celebrated the “transformation process in Mexico” and expressed their support for President Sheinbaum against the attacks of the far right. The event was moderated by Morena’s liaison in Europe, Erick Guerrero.
