“The Phillipines is not for sale!” Anti-US protesters clashed with riot police in Pasay City as cops blocked their march toward US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s with Association of South Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders. The protestors called out both the US and Marcos administrations for selling out Philippine sovereignty through expanded military bases and resource exploitation. The action was organized by BAYAN and Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), along with other labor coalition and youth activist groups. The unrest centers on mounting opposition to US economic and military initiatives in the region, particularly the Pax Silica agreement, which would build supply chains for AI and semiconductor technologies to counter China. While officials pitch a planned 4,000-acre AI and technology hub in New Clark City as a gateway to high-skilled jobs and foreign investment, activists argue it hands over critical land and labor to foreign control.
