His defense prepares to seek immunity and dismissal of the case against him.

On Wednesday, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York held a hearing to establish the schedule for the criminal proceedings against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.

During the hearing, Judge Alvin Hellerstein proposed that the trial begin on June 1, 2027, following two rounds of motions in which the defense will seek immunity for the defendants.

The session focused on the timetable for the disclosure of evidence and classified information that will be subject to judicial review. The process will continue on Nov. 17, when the admissibility of that evidence will be considered.

President Maduro’s defense will file a motion seeking dismissal of the case. If the motion is denied, another evidentiary hearing will be held on March 11, 2027, during which the classified material will be subject to further judicial review.

Outside the New York courthouse, dozens of demonstrators protested what they described as the illegal detention of a sitting president, who they said was abducted in his own country on Jan. 3 in what they characterized as a clear violation of international law.
