On Tuesday, the Zamfara Civil Society Coalition (ZASCON) confirmed that at least 40 people, including women and children, were kidnapped in attacks by armed bandits in Nigeria’s Zamfara State.

The incidents occurred in the Maru district, where armed motorcyclists attacked more than eight villages, including Jidda and Garagi, between Friday and Sunday, according to Attahiru Mohammed, ZASCON’s secretary general.
At least 40 people were reported kidnapped, and ten wounded were treated in local hospitals. The attackers have not contacted the families to demand ransom, leaving their motives unclear.
Mohammed lamented that the criminals attacked between eight and ten villages in two days without hindrance and criticized the lack of response from security forces to the violence.

Regional police spokesman Yazidi Abubakar said he had no initial information about the kidnapping, but assured that an investigation would be opened and details would be released shortly.
He emphasized that security forces have intensified operations against bandits, stating that they recently killed more than 300 in Gumi and dozens more in other parts of the state.
In Nigeria, especially in the central and northwestern regions, “bandits” are criminal gangs that commit assaults and mass kidnappings for ransom. In the northwest, Lakurawa, a group linked to the Islamic State-Sahel Province (ISSP), is also active, carrying out attacks in states such as Kebbi and Sokoto.
