“It’s oily social democracy, not green socialism.” On Novara Live, Ash Sarkar and Michael Walker discuss the split in the labour movement over fossil fuels, after reports that Andy Burnham might issue new oil and gas drilling licences in the North Sea. On Sunday, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that the people of Scotland are “dancing in the streets” at the prospect of more drilling in the North Sea. He said it would transform the UK from a “poverty stricken disaster to one of the richest countries anywhere in the world.” But critics argue that it wouldn’t actually bring down bills or provide energy security, since the vast majority of oil from the North Sea ends up being exported anyway.
