New York mayor calls on the U.S. government to act if the Israeli PM travels to the UN General Assembly.

On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “not welcome” in the city and called on the federal government to execute the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Mamdani reviewed the legal options available and concluded that New York City lacks the authority to enforce the ICC warrant on its own. He therefore urged the federal government to act if Netanyahu travels to New York, where he traditionally attends the United Nations General Assembly in September.

In a video titled “Netanyahu Is a War Criminal,” the New York City mayor said it is “clear” that he does not have the independent legal authority to enforce the warrant. However, “the federal government does, and I ask them to join the ICC and execute this warrant.”

On the eve of Mamdani’s remarks, President Donald Trump said Netanyahu “will not be arrested, under any circumstances or conditions” while he is in the United States.

“Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America. He is fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which recently killed 52,000 innocent protestors, and has spent the last 47 years killing American Soldiers, and others,” the Republican leader posted on Truth Social.

“The only ones that should be arrested are the people that led Iran into this unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, something that should have been dealt with years ago, by previous Presidents!,” Trump added.

Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor of New York City, has described Netanyahu as a “war criminal” in reference to the ICC arrest warrant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Israeli offensive in Gaza.

In November 2024, the ICC issued the warrant against Netanyahu, a measure that Israel rejects and that the United States also does not recognize.
