New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called on the federal government to execute the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he may travel to the city for the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

In a video message posted on Tuesday, Mamdani said his administration reviewed available legal options and determined that New York City has no power to act unilaterally on the ICC warrant. He therefore urged federal authorities to intervene if Netanyahu arrives in the city, where the prime minister traditionally attends the annual UN gathering.

On the other hand, President Donald had asserted the day before on his Truth Social platform that Netanyahu “will not be arrested, in any way, shape or form, while in the United States”.

Mamdani, 34, the first Muslim mayor of New York, has repeatedly labeled Netanyahu a “war criminal,” referencing the ICC arrest warrant issued in November 2024 for war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
