Cuba officially canceled the 26th Habano Festival in Havana to preserve event quality amid a severe energy crisis triggered by the intensified U.S. blockade and a recent oil sanctions.

The hostile trade blockade and a severe energy crisis on the island forced Habanos S.A. to suspend its major international event, redirecting focus to the upcoming Cohiba brand anniversary celebrations in London.

The state-run corporation Habanos S.A. published an official statement this Tuesday explaining the suspension of this premier world gathering.

The organizing committee decided to halt the event to protect its historic standards of global excellence, monitoring local conditions before announcing a new date for international tobacco enthusiasts.

The organizing committee is grateful for the understanding, trust and continued support of distributors, business partners, media and fans from all over the world, and reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting the culture of Habano through initiatives and events that reflect the values of excellence and tradition that distinguish Habanos,” added the company.

This unexpected decision directly responds to the worsening energy crisis affecting the Caribbean nation. Washington intensified its economic aggression on January 29, by implementing a strict oil siege against shipping vessels, which severely restricts fuel imports, causing widespread electrical power disruptions across Cuban provinces.

The annual meeting was scheduled to run from February 24 to 27 in Havana. However, organizers suspended the preparations just one week before the opening ceremony. This international event represents the most critical promotional platform for marketing premium cigars globally, drawing thousands of international visitors.

Cancellation Impacts Public Health

The sudden cancellation represents a significant economic blow to the social development programs of the Cuban Revolution. The festive gathering traditionally culminates in a legendary humidor auction of hand-rolled masterworks. The Cuban government directly transfers all auction profits to support the national free public health system.

During the previous edition in 2025, international buyers established an unprecedented record revenue of 18.72 million dollars for seven exclusive humidors. A single commemorative piece celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Cohiba Behike line sold for 5.2 million dollars. These essential funds buy vital medicine, specialized treatments, and clinical equipment for Cuban hospitals.

Despite these severe financial hurdles caused by foreign intervention, Cuban authorities refuse to capitulate to imperialist pressure. The Cuban presidency denounced this multidimensional assault as an illegal violation of international law. This hostile policy aims to suffocate the economy, block financial transactions, and disrupt traditional commercial networks.

Cohiba Celebrations Continue

The company clarified that this suspension will not affect the scheduled tribute to the historic Cohiba brand. The global distributor will launch the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of this legendary cigar on October 7 in London.

This exclusive event in the British capital will feature the worldwide presentation of the Cohiba Talisman. This limited edition will permanently join the standard portfolio of the classic brand line. The promotion showcases the resilience of Cuban workers in maintaining the supreme quality of their exports.

Distributors, commercial partners, and international media outlets expressed solidarity with the Caribbean island. Habanos S.A. expressed deep gratitude to global cigar enthusiasts for their ongoing trust. The corporation reaffirmed its permanent commitment to promoting the rich cultural heritage of Cuban tobacco.
