Greer Says Measures Could Target Imports From 60 Countries as Trump Expands Tariff Agenda.

On Tuesday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that the administration of President Donald Trump is preparing a new round of tariffs on dozens of countries.

“We expect to have news soon,” Greer said in an interview with CNBC, although he did not specify when the tariffs would take effect.

Greer’s remarks come just days before the tariffs implemented by Trump on Feb. 24 are set to expire unless Congress approves an extension.

The U.S. president imposed the broad-based tariff after the Supreme Court struck down the duties he had previously ordered. The court argued that Trump’s emergency law had exceeded his authority because, with limited exceptions, Congress has exclusive power over tariff policy.

Greer also said the tariffs would target products from 60 countries that are under investigation for “forced labor.” If those allegations are substantiated, Trump would impose the duties under U.S. laws governing “goods produced with forced labor.”

On Monday, Trump had already announced a 50% tariff on most products imported from Canada. Those new duties will take effect in 30 days and exclude, among other products, energy, potash, critical minerals and fish.

The Republican leader said the tariffs are justified by the smoke that has affected the U.S. East Coast as a result of wildfires in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
