The Republican Leader Dismisses Political Considerations Despite Declining Approval Ratings.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said the November midterm congressional elections will not influence his decisions regarding the war with Iran.

During a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, the Republican leader said Iran’s actions related to the Strait of Hormuz “will have no impact” on him.

The president rejected the suggestion that the proximity of the Nov. 3 congressional elections, in which the Republican majority in Congress will be at stake, would shape his strategy toward Iran.

“Everybody says, ‘You’re doing this before the elections.’ I can’t think that this has anything to do with that. I think people are very happy,” he said.

The Trump administration is confronting the crisis with Iran at a time of domestic political pressure, with the president’s approval rating affected by the economic impact of the conflict and rising energy prices.

According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in late April, only 34% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance as president, the lowest level of his second term.

Meanwhile, rising gasoline and diesel prices since the start of the war with Iran have so far imposed an additional cost of about US$71 billion on U.S. consumers, according to a study by Brown University.
