Quito, Jul 20 (Prensa Latina) – The president of the Citizen Revolution (RC), Gabriela Rivadeneira, called for choosing "anything but dictatorship" and accused the Ecuadorian government of attempting to block the opposition from participating in the upcoming local elections.

In an interview with the Teleamazonas TV channel, the leader reacted to the nine-month suspension of the “Amigo” movement (Independent Mobilizing Action Generating Opportunities)—an organization set to sponsor the candidacies of RC representatives.

The main opposition political force has also been under temporary suspension since last March following a decision by the Electoral Contentious Tribunal (TCE), which upheld a complaint filed by the Attorney General’s Office.

“The government does not want to compete with the opposition; it wants to choose which opposition appears on the ballot,” stated Rivadeneira, who argued that the judicial and electoral decisions aim to limit democratic competition ahead of the November 29 elections.

The RC president admitted that the measure against Amigo affected the participation prospects of local leaders, though she assured that the organization’s key figures would still participate in the elections.

“We will be on the ballot,” she emphasized, explaining that several national and local political organizations had agreed to host “Correista” candidacies, although she declined to name them for fear they might also face sanctions, as happened with Amigo.

Rivadeneira expressed that the alliances formed go beyond the political Left and are driven by the defense of the democratic system.
