The Lebanese Army announced Tuesday it has deployed in the town of Zawtar al-Gharbiya, designated as a “pilot zone” in southern Lebanon, as Israeli troops gradually withdraw from the area under a U.S.-mediated agreement.

The Army stated that military units began their deployment in the Nabatieh region town based on contacts with the Military Coordination Group for Lebanon, the trilateral commission formed by Lebanon, Israel, and the United States to oversee the peace agreements and gradual Israeli withdrawal.

The military called on citizens not to head to the town until the security situation stabilizes and to comply with deployed units’ instructions to preserve their safety.

Also deployed Monday were Froun and Srifa, the other two southern pilot zones, coinciding with the U.S. declaration of the implementation of the control transfer operation. The implementation announcement came one day before US President Donald Trump meets Tuesday at the White House with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss peace negotiations with the Zionist entity.

At least 4,328 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since it began its air strikes and ground invasion in March, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

Lebanon and Israel, neighboring countries without diplomatic relations, have been negotiating a ceasefire for months following fighting that broke out in February in the context of the war of aggression against Iran.

The Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah, allied with Tehran and opposed to Israel, rejects the talks and is not part of the negotiations.
