Millions of fans took to the streets across Spain on Monday evening to celebrate the national team’s 1-0 World Cup final victory over Argentina, with celebrations leaving two dead, more than 80 injured, and at least 12 arrested across multiple cities.
Two million people, according to Madrid government data, poured into the capital’s avenues during Monday afternoon to welcome the champions, who toured the city on an open-top bus to celebrate the second world title.

Celebrations continued Monday with receptions at Zarzuela Palace and Moncloa Palace, followed by players and coaching staff changing into commemorative shirts for the open-top bus tour, interacting with crowds through dances and songs.
The route concludes at Cibeles Square, Madrid City Council headquarters, where 120,000 people awaited the finale with confirmed musical performances by Arde Bogotá, Viva Suecia, Ana Mena, Lola Índigo, and Aitana.
Incidents and Fatalities
The first fatality occurred in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, when a 13-year-old died after the upper portion of a fountain collapsed onto people who had climbed onto the structure, with another minor hospitalized in serious condition with a leg fracture and a third receiving medical discharge. Local Police, Civil Guard, Fire Brigade, and Health Emergency Services attended the site, which remains cordoned off under investigation.
The second death occurred in Sonseca, Toledo, where a 20-year-old suffered seizures at 11:16 PM while watching the match broadcast in Plaza de la Virgen, with 112 Emergency services unable to revive him. Local authorities declared three days of official mourning and flew flags at half-staff.
In Madrid, authorities reported seven arrests, including five for alleged hate crimes after a bar argument, one for public disorder and assault on authority at Cibeles Square, and one for serious disobedience at Puerta del Sol, while health services transported 36 injured to hospitals.
