The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate denounced on July 20, that Israel’s occupation forces committed 467 violations against the press in the first half of 2026, including the killing of 8 journalists, 27 arbitrary arrests and 192 cases of censorship and equipment confiscation.
During a press conference in the occupied West Bank, the Committee for Freedoms detailed that these systematic aggressions include killings, detentions, physical assaults, live fire incidents and deliberate obstruction of journalistic work in the field.
The syndicate documented 192 censorship and equipment retention incidents, representing more than 41% of all reported cases -the single largest category of violations.

The monthly statistical breakdown reveals a pattern of sustained hostility. February recorded the highest number of attacks with 122 incidents against journalists, followed by January with 109, June with 89, May with 55, March with 53 and April with 39 documented aggressions.
The sharp increase in the first two months of the year correlates with intensified Israeli military operations in the northern Gaza Strip, where ground incursions into Jabalia, Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun during January and February created extremely dangerous conditions for reporters attempting to document civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction.

The director of the union commission, Muhammad Al-Lahham, asserted that these figures lay bare the hostile environment facing local reporters in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. “Every statistic represents a journalist whose right to inform has been violently denied,” Al-Lahham stated. He condemned in the strongest terms the killing of eight Palestinian journalists during the first half of 2026, human losses that raise the total number of media workers violently killed since October 2023 to 264.
The syndicate noted that Israeli forces have specifically targeted journalists wearing press vests and traveling in clearly marked media vehicles, raising concerns about deliberate targeting rather than incidental exposure to combat. International press freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, have documented similar patterns and called for independent investigations that have so far not materialized.
A Widening Crackdown
Physical persecution against reporters in the occupied territories during this semester included 27 arbitrary arrests, 29 episodes of targeted live fire and 78 attacks with tear gas and stun grenades. The syndicate also registered 257 specific firearms incidents -meaning Israeli forces directly aimed weapons at journalists on more than a quarter of all documented occasions.
Beyond direct violence, Israeli authorities have systematically dismantled the infrastructure of Palestinian journalism. The report documented the forcible expulsion of 19 journalists from the historic Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, the confiscation of 22 essential pieces of equipment, the storming of seven homes and news offices, the closure of three local news agencies and the cyber-blocking of five digital news portals.
In a broader historical perspective, from October 2023 to June 2026, the syndicate has recorded a staggering total of 4,127 violations against press freedom executed by the Israeli regime. This wartime record has resulted in the death of 264 media workers, injuries to 226 professionals, the detention of 193 journalists, the total destruction of 187 media outlets and the bombing of 140 family homes belonging to journalists.
Al-Lahham emphasized that the deliberate targeting of media infrastructure -including the bombing of the Al-Jalaa Tower in 2021 that housed Associated Press and Al Jazeera offices- has established a dangerous precedent that the international community has failed to address. He called on the International Criminal Court and UNESCO to urgently intervene and hold Israeli military commanders accountable for what he described as “a calculated policy of silencing the Palestinian narrative.”
The syndicate’s report comes as press freedom organizations worldwide have documented a global decline in media safety, with Palestine consistently ranking as the most dangerous place in the world for journalists to operate. The ongoing blockade on Gaza, the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank and the increasing use of administrative detention orders against Palestinian reporters all contribute to a climate of fear that threatens to silence independent journalism in the occupied territories entirely.
