The international InnoLabs project is progressing in its implementation to strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship in higher education institutions in Cuba and Ecuador. The initiative, funded by the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) program, seeks to consolidate laboratories dedicated to solving local problems and strengthening ties between academia, communities, and the productive sector.

The Vice-Rector of Strategic Management at the University of Holguín (UHo), Marisol Pérez Campaña, explained that the cooperation network includes the Technological University of Havana (Cujae) and the University of Cienfuegos in the Caribbean nation.
The project also brings together organizations from Spain, Belgium, Cuba, and Ecuador, with the support of specialists from the University of Alicante and Belgian academic institutions to co-create these spaces.
The central focus of InnoLabs is the creation of laboratories in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These environments are designed to develop sustainable programs and address community needs, ensuring the active participation of young people through open innovation and the integration of academic knowledge with grassroots creativity.

According to Pérez, the laboratories will have specialized equipment to foster the development of practical skills, including the creation of prototypes as part of the initiative’s material contributions.
The project coordinator at the University of Honolulu (UHo) explained that the strategy prioritizes undergraduate training based on the principle of learning by doing, while also incorporating postgraduate activities according to the needs identified during the training process.
At the regional level, Cuban universities are already implementing the project’s objectives. The CreLab 2026 Hackathon was recently held, an event focused on finding creative solutions for the construction materials industry, which brought together students of Industrial, Mechanical, and Computer Engineering to apply practical experimentation and community engagement.
Over the next three years, the initiative will support the creation of pilot laboratories and institutional frameworks. The aim is to promote the role of universities as agents of inclusive entrepreneurship, strengthen institutional capacity for applied research and knowledge transfer, and equip students with the tools to make a real-world impact.
