On Monday, international news agencies confirmed that the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) will open a disciplinary investigation into the incidents involving Argentina’s national team players after the 2026 World Cup final.

More specifically, FIFA has appointed an investigator to examine the events that took place after the match in which Spain defeated Argentina in New Jersey.
The federation will review the referees’ reports and footage from the match before deciding whether to take action and impose sanctions on the Argentine players.
At the end of extra time, Spain’s players ran across the MetLife Stadium field to celebrate winning their second World Cup title.

The text reads, “FIFA will open an investigation into the Argentine national team for the incidents that occurred after the 2016 World Cup final against Spain. According to the newspaper El País, the events unfolded while Spanish players were celebrating their victory on the field, at which point several Argentine players and a member of the coaching staff were involved in a tense exchange. Video of the heated moment has gone viral on social media.”
Argentina’s Nahuel Molina punched Spain’s Rodri Hernandez, triggering a mass confrontation at the end of the match that resulted in Leandro Paredes being sent off. Likewise, Argentina assistant coach Roberto Fabian Ayala also pushed Spain’s Dani Olmo.
Another controversy arose when Argentina’s national team turned its back and did not look at the champions as Spain prepared to lift the World Cup trophy.
On Monday, EFE and Sky Sports also reported that FIFA will investigate the behavior of Argentina’s national team, which could face a range of sanctions.
