Diplomats called for ICRC access to Palestinian detainees and raised concerns over prison conditions.
On Monday, Elon Musk’s social media platform X blocked the account of the United Kingdom’s Consulate in Jerusalem after diplomats from several countries criticized Israeli policy toward Palestinian detainees.

More specifically, the diplomatic missions of the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Norway, Ireland, the European Union, Canada, and other European countries issued a joint statement warning about the precarious conditions of prisoners.
Through the British Consulate’s account, those missions called on Israel to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) access to the prisoners.
Among them is Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian pediatrician and former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, who is currently in critical condition and faces an imminent threat to his life while being held by Israel without charge.
As of early July 2026, his lawyer reports that he is almost unrecognizable because of severe injuries, extreme weakness and significant weight loss exceeding 40 kilograms (88 pounds) since his arrest in December 2024.

The following is the joint statement issued by the diplomatic missions that was removed from the X platform:
“Joint local statement of diplomatic missions on the extensive use of administrative detention by Israeli authorities without formal charge.
Over 9,000 Palestinians are detained in Israeli prisons, including thousands held without charge or trial.
Human rights organizations describe prison conditions for Palestinians as severe and life-threatening, citing inadequate food, denial of medical care and systematic abuse. We are deeply concerned by recent reports regarding the deterioration of Dr. Abu Safiyah’s health.
Detainees have the right to be informed about the charges underlying any detention, must be granted access to legal assistance, and be subject to a fair trial.
We call on Israel to uphold its human rights obligations towards detainees under international law, including by granting the ICRC immediate access to all detention facilities. We welcome the recent Israeli Supreme Court ruling on ICRC access and urge its full implementation.”
