President Tamas Sulyok signed the country’s 17th constitutional amendment, triggering the end of his mandate.

On Sunday, Hungary’s Prime Minister Peter Magyar said that he will meet chess grandmaster Judit Polgar on Monday to ask her to serve as the country’s new president.

In his Facebook post, Magyar described Polgar as a figure “synonymous with talent and perseverance,” adding that the country needs “unity, peace, and a president of whom every Hungarian can be proud.”

He said the presidency represents “the highest form of service,” and that he would consider it an honor if Polgar accepted the nomination.

Polgar, born in Budapest in 1976, is a Hungarian chess grandmaster and a five-time Chess Olympiad champion.

On Saturday, President Tamas Sulyok signed the country’s 17th constitutional amendment, triggering the end of his mandate as head of state.

The Parliament has a maximum of 30 days to elect the successor of Sulyok, whom PM Magyar considers a “puppet” of the system built by Viktor Orban during his 16 years in power (2010-2026).

Until a new president is appointed, presidential duties will be temporarily transferred to the Speaker of Parliament, Agnes Forsthoffer, of the ruling Tisza party. The Hungarian presidency is elected by Parliament, where the Magyar party holds an overwhelming majority of over two-thirds of the 199 seats.
