Nicaragua’s leader marks 47 years since the revolution with constitutional proposals and renewed support for Cuba and Venezuela.
Nicaragua marked the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Popular Revolution on Sunday, July 19, with nationwide commemorations and a central ceremony in Managua where President Daniel Ortega proposed constitutional reforms and reiterated his government’s support for Cuba and Venezuela amid what he described as ongoing foreign pressure against sovereign nations.

The anniversary recalls the July 19, 1979 entry of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) into Managua, which ended the Somoza dictatorship after years of armed conflict.
During the main ceremony, attended by the leadership of the Nicaraguan Army, the National Police and representatives of state institutions, Ortega proposed incorporating into the Constitution the principle that political authority belongs to the people.
“Formally, it is necessary to establish in the Constitution the principle that the one who presides over the presidency is the people president. The people president, the youth president, the workers president, the farmers president,” Ortega said.
The president also referred to the human cost of the historical process that led to the anniversary, stating: “How much pain, how much blood it has cost the people of Nicaragua to reach this 47th anniversary!”
Co-president Rosario Murillo addressed supporters gathered at Juan Pablo II Faith Square, saying: “We confirm that our battle is in the blue and white of our sky, of our glorious flag, and in the immortal red and black that holds us when it arrives. Our victory is peace.”
The commemorations included cultural, political and community activities focused on peace, unity and national sovereignty. Official events began in the early hours with motorized celebrations and caravans accompanied by the National Police and United Firefighters.
In the department of Rivas, FSLN supporters gathered at the party’s municipal headquarters fo recreational activities and caravans through main avenuesr. Similar events were held in neighborhoods of Managua’s District V.
Murillo said sovereignty remained an essential national principle, stating: “We move forward in dignity and national honor as Sandino wanted, as Sandino commanded.”
Ortega criticizes foreign intervention
During his speech, Ortega warned young people about what he described as continued attempts by powerful countries to dominate other nations.
“The beasts, the diabolical beasts are always looking for ways to dominate peoples, to steal the wealth that peoples have,” Ortega said, referring to the history of US intervention in the region. He added: “The imperialists of the earth cannot be believed even a little bit.”
The Nicaraguan leader devoted a significant part of his remarks to Venezuela, recalling the legacy of former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and reaffirming his support for the Venezuelan government.
“There we have a very clear example: the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, where Chávez, we had him here, he did not die, and the president of Venezuela, another president continued the relations with Nicaragua and Latin America, President Nicolás,” Ortega said.
He criticized actions by Washington against Venezuela and expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people.
“What did they do? With all their power they went, they stormed the Presidential Palace… and took him to put him in a prison in the United States. Look, it is a monstrosity. Who are the ones capable of carrying out these monstrosities? Those who, at the service of the powers, ask those powers to do the same,” Ortega said.
He also stated that “there are no international organizations that are concerned at this moment” about sovereign peoples, while accusing some groups of aligning themselves with foreign interests.
Support for Cuba
Ortega also reiterated Nicaragua’s support for Cuba, referring to the US economic blockade that he said has lasted for more than six decades.
“They have kept them blocked for more than 60 years and they have resisted, but there are Cubans living in the United States who ask the US government to militarily invade Cuba and to take prisoner, as they took Nicolás, the Army General Raúl Castro,” Ortega said.

He concluded his remarks on Cuba by stating: “Our embrace, our greetings to the people of Cuba, to Raúl and to Miguel Díaz-Canel.”
Murillo closed the commemorative event by reaffirming the government’s commitment to its political path and national sovereignty.
“We do not stop moving forward, consolidating with communion, liberation, with a growing awareness that is soul and heart. We proclaim that we are the same people of peace,” she said.
