The Color Esperanza Foundation, along with a group of about 50 volunteers, prepared this Saturday the “largest” cake in Venezuela with the aim of distributing it to minors, on the eve of Children’s Day in the South American country, who are in shelters after the double earthquake of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 on June 24.

The president of the foundation, Marelisa Acevedo, explains that they had done this event last year, but Acevedo pointed out that they repeated it this time in view of the situation in which hundreds of children were left after losing their homes due to the double earthquake almost a month ago.

Decorated with the colors of the Venezuelan flag, the cake measures about eight meters long and 1.20 meters wide. They estimate distributing some 3,000 pieces of cake in the municipal shelters, located in the east of the Venezuelan capital.

The double earthquake on June 24 affected the northern part of Venezuela, especially La Guaira state, near Caracas, and has left a balance of 5,069 dead and 16,740 injured, according to the latest official balance on Friday.

In addition, 21,235 people remain in 107 temporary camps.

The government reported last weekend about the start of a biometric census to find out how many homes are needed, although it estimates that it could be 25,000.
