One month after his detention by HSI agents in Phoenix, Arizona, Colombian activist and content creator Beto Coral was deported and arrived in Bogotá on Thursday. According to a NY Times report, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had personally ordered Coral’s detention, accusing him of carrying out “political activities” that made his presence in the country incompatible with US foreign-policy interests. Coral is an outspoken critic of Colombia’s president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, who posted cryptically on social media about Coral’s arrest in his Phoenix home on June 16 hours before the news was made public. In an interview with BT in June, Tatiana Camacho, the mother of Coral’s son, alleged that he had been tortured while in detention.
