The 2026 World Cup final is shaping up to be the most expensive match in the tournament’s history. This is true at least when it comes to ticket prices. The final, set to be played at MetLife Stadium between Argentina and Spain, has seen resale prices skyrocket. The cheapest tickets are going for more than $8,000, while some premium seats are being listed for over $61,000. In the context of the football world, this Cup final could break not just records, but affordability expectations for fans globally.
FIFA has said that official ticket prices are much lower. However, the enormous demand for the final has sent prices on the resale market to record levels. The situation has sparked criticism from fans who say the match is becoming impossible for ordinary supporters to afford, especially for those who always hoped to attend a world cup in person.
Cheapest tickets start above $7,000
According to the New York Post, the cheapest ticket available on the resale platform SeatGeek was listed at $7,253, including fees. Seats closer to the field were even more expensive. Notably, with interest focused on the Cup, the world’s biggest football tournament, lower-level tickets started around $14,362.
Prices could climb even higher as the final gets closer. This is especially likely with Lionel Messi expected to be one of the biggest attractions. Moreover, there is speculation that it could be his final Cup appearance on the world stage, further driving demand.
FIFA releases more (expensive) tickets
The Associated Press reported that FIFA made more tickets available for the final. But even official prices remain out of reach for many fans. A Category 2 ticket was priced at $7,380. Meanwhile, premium Category 1 seats ranged from $19,995 to $32,970, cementing this as one of the most exclusive world cup finals in history.
Luxury hospitality packages were even more expensive, reaching $34,500 per person. When you consider what’s included, such as premium seating and access to hospitality experiences, only those willing to spend Cup-level amounts on one of the world’s biggest events are able to attend.
World Cup tickets listed for more than $61,000
While the New York Post did not report a specific $61,000 listing, several reports from the resale market indicate higher prices. In particular, the most exclusive seats have been offered at world cup prices above that level.
The huge gap between ticket prices and what many fans can afford has reignited debate. Specifically, people are asking whether major sporting events, such as the Cup, are becoming reserved only for the wealthiest supporters globally.
