Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian urged the United States to immediately cease threats of “use of force” against Cuba and all forms of blockade, following CBS News reports that Trump administration officials had revealed Washington evaluated a possible military operation against the island in recent weeks.

The use or threat of force constitutes a serious breach of the UN Charter endangering peace and regional and global security, Jian emphasized. He further reaffirmed China’s support for Cuba in defending its national sovereignty and its opposition to external interference, stating Beijing is willing to work with the international community to safeguard international fairness and justice.

Jian condemned the comprehensive blockade and illegal sanctions imposed for over 60 years by the U.S. side, calling them a profound calamity for the Cuban people.

Earlier this year, the United States threatened tariffs on countries supplying oil to the island, alleging it poses a threat to U.S. national security. Since then, the country has experienced severe energy blackouts nationwide, disrupting industries, local businesses, people’s lives, and medical services.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has asserted that these measures, framed within a “maximum pressure” policy, hinder the attainment of human quality and aggravate the island’s economic situation.

The U.S. Department of Justice additionally indicted former President Raúl Castro (2008-2018) and five military officers for the 1996 downing of two aircraft linked to the Miami-based exile group “Brothers to the Rescue.” Havana rejects the accusations, arguing the aircraft were overflying Cuban airspace without authorization.
