Protests are erupting across the United States in response to the deaths of three immigrant workers in just seven days at the hands of federal agents, with a national day of action to Stop ICE Terror planned for July 18. Karina Garcia, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, says “both parties have been playing up this war on immigrants to distract from their inability to address the problems facing working families in this country. They’ve used immigrants as punching bags over and over again to divide people, to distract from all of their unnecessary, expensive, and endless wars.” The Trump administration’s surge in anti-immigrant operations is racking up a body count. On July 7, ICE agents in unmarked SUVs chased down Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old homebuilder who’d lived in Houston for 35 years, and shot him dead. Less than a week later on July 13, an ICE agent in Biddeford, Maine, shot and killed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian delivery driver with work authorization and a Social Security number, outside his own home. His wife and three-year-old daughter were in the car and saw his body on the ground. The next morning, in Florida a 28-year-old Mexican man was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer while running from federal agents at a gas station. “ICE pulled the trigger because Congress gave them the guns. They approved billions more in funding for a criminal organization when they knew damn well what could happen. Every politician who voted for ICE funding is also responsible for these deaths.” Watch full episodes of BT Live, join breakthroughnews.org as a member today!
