UK Minister Kyle argued that one of the World Cup’s core principles is to separate politics from sporting practice.

On Thursday, the British government asked FIFA to open an investigation after Argentine footballers displayed a banner claiming sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands following their victory over England.

British Science Minister Peter Kyle told the BBC that the gesture was “completely inappropriate” and stressed that politics must be kept out of international football. He expects a thorough investigation, recalling that one of the World Cup’s principles is to separate politics from sporting practice.

The Argentine players defended the display of the banner with the phrase “The Malvinas are Argentine” after their 2-1 victory over England, alluding to the South Atlantic archipelago disputed in the 1982 war.

Argentine President Javier Milei asked that the sporting result not be linked to the issue of the Malvinas Islands, which have been under British sovereignty since 1833, although historically claimed by the South American country.

The match was considered high-risk due to the intense rivalry between fan groups, leading U.S. security officials and FIFA to ban political flags and symbols at Atlanta’s stadium.

The measure expressly included symbols related to the Malvinas Islands, seeking to prevent incidents during a match marked by historical tension between the England and Argentina national teams.

The Argentine gesture reignited the diplomatic dispute over the Malvinas Islands. FIFA will have to assess whether the action constitutes a violation of its rules on political neutrality.
