Argentinean footballers displayed a flag with the message “Malvinas are Argentinean” on the pitch after defeating England 2-1 in the World Cup semifinal, defying a FIFA ban imposed at the request of the British government.

The Argentinean national team delivered another historic performance on Wednesday, overcoming England in a semifinal charged with history, tension and football. Lionel Scaloni’s squad came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory and will now seek back-to-back world titles against Spain at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

But the most powerful image arrived after the final whistle. Although in the days before the match, Argentinean coach Lionel Scaloni, took care to ease the tension, saying that it would only be a football match, internally many players experienced it with other condiments, and it was demonstrated in the message that some players gave, through the flag placed on one of the areas.

As players celebrated the qualification alongside thousands of Argentinean fans present in Atlanta, Giovani Lo Celso and Lisandro Martínez unfurled a flag bearing the legend “Malvinas are Argentinean“, an image that quickly spread across social media and international news outlets.

The gesture acquired special significance because it occurred just one day after tournament security authorities confirmed that flags, shirts or signs referencing the Malvinas Islands would be banned from entering the stadium. The measure, agreed between FIFA, U.S. authorities and security agencies from both countries, responded to regulations prohibiting messages considered political or provocative in a match categorized as maximum risk.

The decision had generated intense debate ahead of the classic encounter between Argentina and England. Ultimately, the message appeared on the pitch once the match ended, as part of the players’ celebration rather than the official spectacle or the stands.

Argentina now faces potential sanctions from FIFA for displaying a flag with a political message, according to international regulations.

Striker Lautaro Martínez, author of the second goal against England, acknowledged that the match carried a distinct emotional weight due to the history between both countries. “The Malvinas war is something that happened many years ago, but for us it was not a match like any other. It was a special match,” he stated.

For his part, midfielder Leandro Paredes asked by the press after the match, supported the gesture of his teammates and reaffirmed the Argentinean claim over the South Atlantic archipelago. “And they will always be Argentine,” he reaffirmed.

“We are aware that it is a sad part of our history and hurts. We played for all our people and did it the best way. What we experienced in the anthem was exciting. Although we wanted to convey that it was just a football match, we are aware that this is not the case and that it was very important for our country,” Paredes said. Meanwhile, Lisandro Martínez, at first, excused himself from speaking on the subject, but already at the end of the day he assured: “We could not fail the Argentinean people”.

Defiance of FIFA Censorship

The gesture by the Albiceleste players defeated the systematic censorship imposed by FIFA and the United Kingdom government, which had been endorsed beforehand by the administration of Javier Milei. The international football governing body had categorized the sovereignty claim as a “political or provocative message.”

According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which governs the rules of the sport, this action violates official regulations. Article Four of the IFAB Laws of the Game, which regulates player equipment.

The regulations of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body that governs football rules, state that “players must not show underwear with political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images, nor advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo.” In this sense, the Argentinean players’ action on the pitch now places them in potential violation of these statutes.

In that case, FIFA could refer to the current action of Argentinean footballers as a violation of the FIFA Stadium Code of Conduct, which details the complete list of objects and items prohibited for footballers.

The regulation establishes that any infraction will result in sanctions for the player or the team by the competition organizer, the national association, or FIFA.

While the code does not specify exact punishments for this particular violation, historical precedents suggest the penalty will likely be a financial fine. This fine would apply directly to the Argentinean Football Association (AFA) once the governing body receives the official match report from the referee and tournament observers.

To enforce the restriction, authorities deployed the largest security operation of the tournament around the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, involving agents from the FBI, local police, and the DEA. Security personnel searched supporters at access points, confiscating all materials related to the sovereignty claim.

Hay partidos que trascienden el fútbol.

Symbolism Beyond Football

The Malvinas Islands, located approximately 500 kilometers from the Argentinean mainland, have been under British occupation since 1833, when the United Kingdom expelled the Argentinean population and established a colonial administration.

The 1982 war between Argentina and Great Britain resulted in 649 Argentinean combatants killed and remains a profound wound in the nation’s collective memory. In this sense, Argentina has maintained an uninterrupted sovereignty claim over the archipelago, recognized by the United Nations and the vast majority of Latin American nations.

The UK currently maintains an illegal and militarized occupation of the territory, as well as looting its natural resources daily.

For Argentinean players and fans, the Malvinas claim transcends party politics and represents a national cause recognized by the United Nations Decolonization Committee. The gesture on the world’s biggest sporting stage reaffirms that historical memory and national sovereignty remain central to Argentine identity.

The FIFA potential ruling on the flag incident will be closely watched, but for Argentina, the immediate objective remains clear: win on Sunday and claim the fourth World Cup title, cementing a dynasty that began in Qatar 2022.
