NEW: We’re on the verge of the biggest power company merger in history. It comes at the worst possible time as data centers are driving up electricity bills. NextEra is trying to buy Dominion Energy, which serves the nation’s largest concentration of hyperscale data centers, and create a $400 billion energy monopoly. NextEra already owns Florida Power & Light, which built its business on gouging customers. Almost 30% of every FPL customer’s bill goes straight to profit – 2x a normal utility. In 2024, FPL cut power to 1.3 million homes. NextEra claims the merger will improve customer experiences, but the monopoly would just make it harder for regulators to hold companies accountable and lower rates.
