“To every survivor, I hope today brings some measure of peace.” Labour MP Ian Byrne, who witnessed the Hillsborough disaster as a teenager, held back tears on Tuesday as he hailed a new law compelling public officials to act transparently during investigations. After 97 people died in a crush at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in 1989, police spread lies in an effort to blame the fans for the disaster, while hiding evidence of their own failings. The new Hillsborough Law aims to prevent authorities from acting dishonestly in public inquiries in the future.
