“ICE killed innocent people. And we are the people to stand up to them and say NO MORE!” Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Portland, Maine, to protest the killing of Joan Sebastian Guerrero by federal agents on Monday, July 14. Guerrero was shot and killed by ICE in Biddeford, Maine, less than a week after Texas father Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed by ICE agents in Houston, Texas. Protests have been organized in cities across the United States to demand an end to federal immigration enforcement operations which have seen a considerable increase in the last week. While US Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin is attempting to implement a “quieter” approach to such operations, aiming to increase arrest numbers but keep ICE and DHS “out of the headlines”, the latest incidents have put the agency under public scrutiny once again.
