The Colombian president calls for investigation after Johan Sebastian Duran was killed in Maine.
On Tuesday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned the death of 26-year-old Johan Sebastian Duran during an operation by agents of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of Maine.

“What happened in Maine is the murder of a Colombian, a Latin American, at the hands of the U.S. government. They killed him because they believed him to be an inferior human being without rights, and as a person he had all the rights granted to every human being simply by being born, and he was a citizen with rights in the United States.
“I expect Colombia’s foreign service in the United States to take the swiftest possible legal and humanitarian action so that those responsible for this homicide are held accountable. I expect a message from President Donald Trump to Colombia regarding what happened.
“May Johan Sebastian Duran rest in peace, a victim of the state because of persecution and exclusion against a civilian population group for ethnic and cultural reasons, prohibited throughout the world since the Nuremberg trials,” Petro concluded.

Duran, a Colombian citizen from Bucaramanga, had emigrated to the United States in search of job opportunities and was living in the city of Biddeford.
Videos posted on social media show the moment he was killed during the ICE operation, highlighting what they depict as the arbitrary and abusive nature of the incident. His father said Johan Sebastian had a work permit and complied with the requirements established by U.S. immigration authorities.
The Colombian Embassy in the U.S. requested information and clarification from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding the circumstances surrounding the Duran’s death.
ICE maintains that one of its agents opened fire after Duran allegedly attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon against agency officials during the operation.
However, witnesses and videos have cast doubt on that account, showing the vehicle moving uncontrollably after the shots were fired. The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Maine State Police, and the state Department of Public Safety.
