On Monday, the crowdfunding website Goteo launched a fundraising campaign to provide energy independence to the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) in Cuba, given the electricity crisis that threatens its academic and creative activities.

The website explains that the school is “more than an academic space, a place of creation and encounter,” but that the voices of its students are at risk of being silenced by the energy instability, which is why they are seeking to build a sustainable system step by step.
Donations range from €10 to €1,000, with rewards such as digital books published by the school, participation in online workshops, and the chance to win a spot in a two-week in-person workshop at the institution.
Phase one of the project will focus on the post-production area, installing portable stations with solar panels and batteries to guarantee constant power for at least eight hours, thus ensuring the completion of audiovisual works.

The text reads, “The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) fights against the blackout in Cuba with cultural initiatives that demonstrate the creative resistance of our institutions and our people to face the genocidal blockade.”
Phase two will focus on classrooms and faculty offices, extending electrical autonomy through fixed photovoltaic systems and battery storage to ensure the continuity of classes and administrative operations.
In the long term, the goal is to transform the school into a 100% renewable energy-powered space, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and the carbon footprint, in line with a vision of cultural and environmental sustainability.
The EICTV, founded four decades ago, is a global benchmark in audiovisual training, with a pedagogical model based on the principle of “learning by doing,” which brings together more than 100 students from various countries on its campus.
