“Just as he stood with the children of Gaza, with the wounded, with the injured, I call on the whole world to to stand with Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and demand his immediate release. It is the absolute least the world owes him." Samaher Abu Safiya, whose brother Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya has been held without charge under Israel’s Unlawful Combatants law since December 2024, says his health continues to deteriorate in Israeli prison, and urged the world to take action in solidarity with the Gaza pediatrician and work for his release. “His face, eyes, and entire body were badly bruised from the punches, he cannot breathe or talk,” Samaher described what Hussam’s lawyer reported from their last visit. “He even lost consciousness in front of his attorney and collapsed to the floor.” Dr. Abu Safiya was arrested in a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, where he served as director. Israel’s supreme court rejected his appeal in June, based on classified material that was not shown to him or his legal team.
