Nayib Bukele Registers Pre‑Candidacy for Third Consecutive  Presidential Term

The results of the primary elections held on Sunday were published on the party’s website, featuring a photograph of Bukele with the word “President,” though no details were provided regarding vote percentages or potential internal contenders.

Bukele, who has already served two consecutive terms, was made eligible to run for a third term thanks to a controversial constitutional reform passed in 2025. However, he has not yet commented on the internal elections.

The next step will be the formal registration of his candidacy with the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), between October 1 and November 19, according to the official schedule.

The text reads, “Recent journalistic investigations reveal that, solely during the first seven years of his term, Bukele and his family have acquired 34 new properties, thereby multiplying by twelve the lands in their possession, valued at more than ten million dollars”

The Bukele-dominated Legislative Assembly approved a constitutional reform on July 31, 2025, modifying Articles 75, 80, 133, 152, and 154, allowing for immediate reelection and extending the presidential term from five to six years, in addition to eliminating the runoff election.

Several recent polls show that Bukele maintains high approval ratings, mainly due to the reduction in violence and the fight against gangs, although the population increasingly demands solutions to the economic crisis.

In December, Bukele stated in an interview that he would like to govern for “ten more years,” although he clarified that it was only a wish. His second term began on June 1, 2024, and was scheduled to end in 2029, but the reform moved the presidential elections forward to 2027.
