The U.S. leader claims the right to charge for the passage of ships.
On Monday, President Donald Trump announced that the United States will reinstate a naval blockade of Iran and charge a 20% fee as compensation for protecting ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran,” the Republican leader wrote in a post published on his Truth Social platform.
“We are reinstating THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran’s ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait.”
“The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as ‘THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,’ but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World. The process and formation will begin immediately,” Trump concluded.
On Monday, in an interview with Fox News, Trump also said Washington would strike Iran “very hard” to “keep the strait safe” and indicated that U.S. forces would likely “administer” the waterway.

Iran Will Not Allow U.S. Interference in Hormuz
In response to Trump’s remarks, the Iranian military warned that it will not allow the United States to interfere in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Once the previous warnings have been issued, we will under no circumstances allow the United States to interfere in the management of the Strait of Hormuz,” Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesman for the Khatam al-Anbiya Unified Command, said.
The United States’ repeated adventurism and wrongdoing have seriously endangered regional security, international trade, and the passage of oil tankers and merchant vessels, he pointed out…
The Iranian Armed Forces “will respond forcefully” to any “disruption and insecurity” caused by U.S. units in the passage of merchant vessels and oil tankers outside the routes designated by Iran and without authorization from Persian authorities.
The Khatam al-Anbiya Unified Command also warned countries in the region that any logistical cooperation or support for U.S. military units will be considered “a war against Iran’s sovereignty and national security.”
It also warned that responsibility for “any situation of insecurity and the spread of war in the region” will rest with the United States and the countries cooperating with the U.S. military.
