Yemen’s Houthis Reaffirm Their Support for Iran

The Defense Ministry reported that the Armed Forces attacked the airport runway to prevent an Iranian plane from landing, claiming that the Houthis “blocked” the arrival of a Yemeni national aircraft.

According to the government, the insurgents insisted that an Iranian plane fly through, “violating Yemeni airspace,” which prompted the attack on the runway as a pressure tactic.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea accused Saudi Arabia, the leader of the military coalition against the insurgents, of being responsible for the bombing, calling it a “blatant act of aggression” and warning that it would not go unanswered.

The Yemeni Defense Ministry had previously ordered the evacuation of the airport and its surrounding area for civilians and humanitarian workers, anticipating military action.

This incident comes amid a dispute over direct air links between Tehran and Sana’a, after Iran operated a civilian flight to transport a Houthi delegation to the funeral of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The Houthis defend the airport’s operation as a humanitarian right, while the government and the coalition maintain that international flights must be coordinated with the legitimate government and comply with security agreements.
