Iran’s Revolutionary Guard shut the Strait of Hormuz until further notice early Sunday, pledging a forceful response to any foreign attempt to open an unauthorised passage, following warnings ignored by several vessels and sustained U.S. interference in the strategic waterway.

The move came after multiple boats failed to heed instructions to move exclusively through a permitted corridor, according to a statement from the armed body. One ship was deemed to have jeopardized maritime safety and was intercepted by the Guard’s navy, which fired warning shots before taking it into custody.

Authorities have stipulated that traffic will not be allowed to resume as long as U.S. interference continues. The Guard’s communiqué also made clear that any U.S. offensive action against Iran – including strikes on hostile bases in the region – would be met with a decisive reply.

The announcement landed just hours after Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of contravening paragraph 9 of the bilateral memorandum of understanding, pointing to fresh U.S. sanctions imposed on the inner circle of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Araghchi characterised the U.S. non-compliance as an addition to “other violations and errors” committed by the United States.

The two countries had signed that memorandum on June 17 to halt the joint U.S.-Israeli war of aggression, clear the Strait of Hormuz, and initiate discussions on Tehran’s nuclear programme.
