The president stated that Mexico agrees with the conclusion of a UN working group that deemed the detention of Peru’s former president arbitrary, and she reiterated her intention to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for the resolution of a working group of the United Nations Organization (UN) that classified the detention of Peru’s former president, Pedro Castillo, as arbitrary.

During the morning press conference, the president stated that this has been the position of the Government of Mexico since the beginning of the case.

Mexico Maintains Its Position on Pedro Castillo

Sheinbaum maintained that the removal of Pedro Castillo did not comply with the rules nor with the number of votes required by Peruvian legislation.

Based on that interpretation, she noted that the former leader’s detention lacked legal justification.

The president emphasized that the Government of Mexico’s position regarding the case will not change.

Seeking to Restore Relations With Peru

Despite maintaining that position, Sheinbaum reiterated that her administration has an interest in restoring diplomatic relations with Peru.

She indicated that Mexico remains willing to strengthen bilateral ties once again.
