Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States of breaching a bilateral memorandum of understanding on Saturday, after Washington announced fresh sanctions targeting entities supposedly linked to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of Treasury sanctioned Iranian businessman Ali Ansari, whom it describes as the head of an international asset network operating for the benefit of Khamenei and senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officials.

Also designated were Hong Kong-based CDM Trading Limited and UAE-based Naba Alzaki Raw Materials Trading LLC, which Washington alleges served as shell companies for financial operations linked to exchange houses.

According to the U.S. government, Ansari was the owner and director of Ayandeh Bank, an entity that Washington says diverted billions of dollars through loans to companies tied to the businessman himself until Iranian authorities ordered its dissolution in October 2025.

Iran has so far kept its word, unlike the so-called U.S. Treasury Secretary who is violating Para 9 of the MoU.

That violation follows other violations and missteps by the United States.

Reality check: There can only be mutual compliance.

The Treasury Department said the sanctions followed the resumption of Iranian attacks on international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi, in a post on social media platform X, asserted that Iran has upheld its commitments so far, contrasting that with what he called the U.S. violation of paragraph 9 of the memorandum, which includes a provision against imposing new sanctions on Tehran.

The memorandum of understanding was signed on June 17 between the U.S. and Iran with the stated aims of ending the war, unblocking the Strait of Hormuz, and opening negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program. In recent days, fresh cross-attacks have occurred across the Middle East.
