The Miami facility monitors cybersecurity, live broadcasts, and stadium operations around the clock.

For the first time in World Cup history, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has its own technology center from which cybersecurity, live broadcasts and operations at all 16 stadiums are monitored 24 hours a day.

“It represents the greatest technological challenge in the history of sports because of the scale involved in operating across three countries simultaneously,” FIFA Technology Director Nacho Fresco said, adding that the Technology Command Center (TCC) is located at FIFA headquarters in Coral Gables, Miami-Dade County.

“The facility processes between 300 million and 400 million cyberattack attempts every day. To address these threats, we work in coordination with the FBI,” Fresco said, emphasizing that the center was established within FIFA headquarters to maintain agility in the chain of command.

“We seek to be as close as possible to FIFA’s leadership structure. That way, those of us responsible for technology can make decisions with extreme speed in response to any crisis that may arise during the tournament,” he said.

To maintain this operational shield, about 350 data analysts, specialized programmers and systems engineers continuously monitor the network infrastructure and cybersecurity of all venues.

All operations are coordinated with the International Broadcast Center in Dallas, Texas, from where television signals are distributed worldwide to about 6 billion fans watching the World Cup.

“From a global perspective, this is a massive scale compared with events such as the Super Bowl, the most popular event in North America, which averages about 105 million viewers. This is an opportunity to demonstrate the reach of our technology,” said Katie Reed, Lenovo’s director of internal operations for North America. The company is making its tournament debut as FIFA’s official technology partner.

Referee Camera Eliminates Motion Sickness

Beyond security, one of the most visible functions coordinated from the center is the referee camera (RefCam), which offers an unprecedented view of the game through a device mounted on the official.

Although Lenovo did not develop the device, it provided digital image stabilization that reduces the original image vibration by up to 60%, eliminating “the motion sickness effect” for viewers and allowing it, for the first time, to be integrated into the live broadcast.

The center also centralizes all real-time match statistics through artificial intelligence. According to Reed, the platform processes “predictive metrics and instant results that allow coaching staffs to prepare their tactics in detail for upcoming matches.”

Personalized Performance for Players

The data are accessible to players through a personalized mobile application on their phones, where they can immediately view their personal records, heat maps, top speed and physical performance metrics to “evaluate which areas they can improve after each match.”

For confidentiality and data protection reasons, technology officials do not disclose the identities of the players or national teams that have made the greatest use of the tool during the World Cup.

The TCC also manages the 3D digital avatars used for millimeter-accurate offside reviews in the television broadcast, as well as the FIFA AI Pro platform. The artificial intelligence system compiles advanced analytical data after matches and makes them available to all national teams “three hours after the final whistle, democratizing access to advanced statistics regardless of each federation’s budget.”
