Israel has responded to the Egyptian football team manager’s comments of support for Gaza by murdering Palestinian Mohamed Fawaz al-Wahidi — Egypt’s organiser of World Cup match screenings in Gaza. The 7 July 2026 murder came just before Egypt’s match against Argentina, where many believe the Egyptians were cheated out of a historic win.
Israel kills Palestinian aid worker
Al-Wahidi was the Egyptian Relief Committee in Gaza’s public relations director. He had organised screenings of World Cup matches for Palestinians as a small glimmer of relief from their suffering under Israeli genocide, starvation and oppression.
But just before the Egypt-Argentina match was about to begin on Tuesday night, an Israeli drone targeted al-Wahidi, along with two children and the driver of a car near him. They were Ahmed Daghmush, 33, Hamza al-Deri, 10, and his little brother Fari, 8. Several people were also wounded in the bombing.
The murder was the latest of hundreds by Israel in Gaza during the supposed ‘ceasefire’. It was not the first time Israel has targeted the Egyptian committee. The occupation killed five committee members in January 2026 as they filmed a new refugee camp.
‘Lost humanity’
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan had dedicated his team’s victory over Australia to Palestine and reminded the world of Israel’s genocide in Gaza and occupation of Palestine. Holding a Palestinian flag, he said:
If there is anyone in the world who does not feel for the Palestinian people, then they have lost part of their humanity – whether they are Arab, European, or American.
Before being Arab, Muslim, Christian or anything else, I am a human being. Through football — the world’s soft power — I want to send a message: please let the Palestinian people live. I ask athletes and journalists everywhere to help deliver that message.
