Countries offered condolences and support during a UN meeting on the humanitarian impact of the June 24 earthquakes.


Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said Wednesday that 170 United Nations member states requested the floor during a special UN meeting to express solidarity with Venezuela following the twin earthquakes that struck the country on June 24.

Speaking during a virtual meeting with representatives of the country’s 87 temporary camps, Rodríguez said the UN session addressed the humanitarian dimension of the emergency caused by the seismic events. She stated that each participating country asked to speak in order to convey condolences and messages of support to the Venezuelan people.

“Today (Wednesday), a meeting was held at the United Nations on the humanitarian dimension resulting from the earthquake, the twin earthquake in Venezuela. You should know that 170 countries participated, and each requested the floor to express solidarity with Venezuela, convey condolences to our people, and continue moving forward,” Delcy Rodríguez said.

The acting president said Venezuela was not facing the emergency alone, pointing to expressions of support from within the country as well as from the international community.

“We have united in solidarity, in love, in understanding, as well as through international solidarity,” she said during the virtual meeting with representatives from the 87 temporary camps.

Acting President added that her government is working in coordination with national and international partners to move beyond the current humanitarian phase and advance toward a stage of development.
