Mexico City. Mexico’s ambassador to the European Union, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, reported that the European Parliament approved the Modernized Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union this Tuesday, with 479 votes in favor, with which the instrument took a decisive step toward its entry into force.

In a video message broadcast from Strasbourg, the diplomat highlighted that the vote registered broad support from the members of the European Parliament and high participation, with the attendance of 663 legislators, figures that, he affirmed, reflect the political backing for strengthening the relationship between the two parties.

Moctezuma also noted that the Interim Trade Agreement, negotiated in parallel, was approved with 474 favorable votes.

The diplomat explained that the next step will be sending the agreements to Mexico so that they may be submitted, as applicable, to the approval of the Senate of the Republic.

“We must be very happy and, above all, very aware that this is just the beginning of a relationship with Europe to bring us closer politically, commercially, and culturally,” the ambassador said.

Both instruments were signed this past May 22 at the National Palace by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

For its part, the Delegation of the European Union in Mexico reported that the European Parliament gave the “green light” to the two agreements, which pave the way to strengthen political ties and expand trade between Mexico and the European bloc.

According to the body, the approval represents a step forward toward a closer relationship between the two parties in various areas of cooperation.
