In May/June 1936, following the election of the Popular Front government, France was engulfed in what was at the time the largest general strike in its history. This inspiring movement won major victories for the working class, such as the 40-hour working week. But just a few years later, many of these were rolled back, and the French working class was atomised under Nazi occupation.
