U.S. military forces carried out airstrikes on Tuesday against targets in the Iranian port city of Sirik, Qeshm Island, and Bandar Abbas, in response to attacks attributed to Iran against three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, including a Qatari-flagged gas carrier and a Saudi tanker, according to U.S. Central Command and Iranian media reports.
The attacks occurred as a one-week truce expired and violate the 14-point memorandum of understanding signed by Presidents Trump and Pezeshkian in mid-June, which established a cessation of operations on all fronts and respect for each state’s internal matters.

The U.S. Department of Treasury revoked temporary exemptions for Iranian oil sales, replacing General License X with X1, eliminating prior authorization and ordering an orderly closure of permitted operations. Brent crude futures rose 5.07% to above $75 per barrel.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Persian Gulf security should not be based on Centcom leadership, asserting the strait is under Iran’s command. An official told CNBC that Iran will benefit only with good behavior, linking the suspension to recent attacks. An anonymous Iranian official warned the U.S. against provocative actions, stating they will receive immediate and decisive response, and stressed that traffic follows agreements signed with Iran.
Tehran has maintained restrictions since February 28, when the U.S.-Israeli aggression began. A Pakistan‑mediated 14-point Memorandum of Understanding signed July 17 calls for permanent end to hostilities and commits both parties to final agreement talks within 60 days.
