Belgium defeated the United States 4-1 in Seattle to secure their place in the World Cup quarterfinals, where they will face Spain on July 10 in Los Angeles.


Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring in the 9th minute and added a second in the 33rd, either side of Malik Tillman’s 31st-minute free-kick equaliser for the U.S. Hans Vanaken extended the lead in the 57th minute before Romelu Lukaku completed the rout in stoppage time.

Rudi García’s side now turn their attention to the quarterfinal clash against Spain.

The Spanish national team hold a dominant historical record over Belgium, with 12 victories in 23 meetings, against six wins for the Belgians and four draws.

Spain is also unbeaten in their last eight encounters, claiming five consecutive triumphs since their penalty-shootout defeat to Belgium in Mexico 1986.
