Venezuela Earthquakes: Jorge Rodriguez Calls for National Unity for Reconstruction

Lieutenants who recently graduated from the academies of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) were deployed to the areas hardest hit by the June 24 earthquakes to join the institutional effort in civil reconstruction plans and community support.

The young military personnel have assumed a disciplined role in carrying out several critical functions on the front lines of the emergency response. Their efforts are currently focused on providing technical and logistical support for temporary camps, assessing and clearing debris to restore damaged infrastructure, and strengthening the operational capacity of local health centers treating those affected.

The deployment comes in direct response to the operations order issued by Acting President Delcy Rodriguez during her official speech on July 5 commemorating Venezuela’s Independence Day.

In her address, she assumed direct responsibility for mobilizing the armed forces to the disaster zones, while also condemning the destabilizing intentions of anti-patriotic sectors amid the national mourning. The head of state emphasized the strictly humanitarian nature of the mission assigned to the armed forces and reaffirmed her authority in the face of what she described as interested narratives.

“I gave the order, as Commander in Chief of our Bolivarian National Armed Force! When I took the oath, I said: ‘I take the command baton and hand it over to the Venezuelan people so it may go wherever the people need it most.’ I gave the order, and I take responsibility for our Bolivarian National Armed Force, which is there on the ground, embracing the families waiting to recover their loved ones from beneath the rubble of silence!” Acting President Rodriguez stated.

Operation Update on the Ground

With the incorporation of this new class of officers, the FANB and militia structures are reinforcing security cordons and the distribution of medical supplies and food along the central coast, the area hardest hit by the seismic event.

The young military personnel will remain deployed indefinitely in coordination with international brigades and more than 27,000 civilian volunteers operating on the ground, moving urgently to stabilize essential public services and prepare areas designated for the Housing Construction Plan in the state.

As of July 5, authorities reported that 86,794 families were receiving assistance under the comprehensive relief plan implemented in the states of La Guaira, Caracas, Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo, Lara, and Yaracuy.

The official toll also confirmed the deaths of 3,342 people and of 16,740 injured, while state medical facilities have provided direct medical care to 23,820 patients. In addition, authorities have recorded 995 aftershocks in the region, and search and rescue operations have not stopped.

Thanks to the large-scale deployment in the disaster zones, emergency teams have rescued 6,462 people alive since the emergency began on June 24.
