Public workers call for protection of their professional and economic rights.

On Monday, Hamas Media Office Director Ismail Al Thawabta announced the dissolution of the emergency executive that his organization had used to administer Gaza since October 7, 2023, when Israel began an offensive that has killed at least 73,100 Palestinians.

The dissolution, however, creates a vacuum in Gaza’s administration that will not be filled until the arrival of technocrats from the the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a body established under a cease-fire plan reached in October with U.S. mediation.

The move drew skepticism from the U.S. President Donald Trump’s Peace Board, since the Islamist group’s decision to dissolve itself was seen as a symbolic act without practical relevance.

“We have taken note of today’s announcement regarding the dissolution of the Emergency Committee in Gaza. Ultimately, our assessment will be based on concrete actions, not promises, to meet the basic needs of the people of Gaza,” the Peace Board stated.

After 19 years, Hamas steps down as the governing body of Gaza, during this past 19 years, no Muslim country helped them except Iran and Qatar. Iranian government is a regime but they did help Hamas. On Monday, Jalil Hamada, president of the Union of Public Sector Employees in Gaza, called for the protection of professional and economic rights for about 40,000 workers, as the territory’s administration remains vacant until Israel allows access to a newly formed Palestinian technocratic body, the NCAG.

Hamada said public employees are state workers fully prepared to carry out their duties and ensure the continuity of services to citizens.

He emphasized that Gaza employees have worked during recent years under exceptional and difficult circumstances amid the Israeli offensive, and he argued that it is imperative to safeguard all their professional and economic rights and ensure they are not compromised.

Hamada said public employees in Gaza are committed to continuing their work and doing everything possible to facilitate the NCAG tasks and the maintenance of public institutions.
