Funeral ceremonies began in Tehran with a 10-kilometer procession attended by millions and will continue in Qom, Karbala, Najaf and Mashhad.


Millions of people gathered in Tehran on Monday for the funeral procession of the martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in what organizers described as the largest public gathering in Iran’s modern history. The procession began at 6:00 a.m. local time (02:30 GMT) from the Grand Mosalla religious complex, where his body had lain in state for the previous two days.

The procession is expected to travel 10 kilometers, passing through Damavand Street, Imam Hussein Square, Enqelab Street, Enqelab Square, Azadi Street and Shahid Lashgari Highway near Mehrabad Airport. Organizers estimate the route will take between 10 and 12 hours to complete.

On Sunday, Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani led funeral prayers for the martyred leader, his son-in-law Dr. Mesbah-ul-Hoda Bagheri-Kani, his daughter Zahra Haddad-Adel, his 14-month-old granddaughter Zahra Mohammadi-Golpayegani and Seyyedeh Bushra Hosseini-Khamenei.

Delegations from dozens of countries arrived in Tehran on Friday to pay tribute during the funeral ceremonies. The delegations included presidents, prime ministers and senior officials from Russia, Türkiye, Pakistan, Iraq, Tajikistan, China and India.

The ceremonies will continue on Tuesday in the holy city of Qom. On Wednesday, commemorative processions are scheduled at the shrines of Imam Hussein (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS) in Karbala, as well as at the shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf.

In accordance with the martyred leader’s wishes, the burial will take place on Thursday, July 9, at the sacred shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad.
