At least eleven people died and others were injured in attacks by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against a town controlled by the Sudanese Army located in North Darfur, in western Sudan and near the border with Chad, local sources reported this Sunday.

The Popular Resistance in the state of North Darfur, formed by allied forces of the Army in the area, indicated in a statement that the RSF carried out “a retaliatory attack” against Qurbara and Aru, towns of Um Buru, “causing the death of 11 civilians, injuries to others, the burning of markets and the displacement of residents.”

The Popular Resistance indicated that all the areas attacked by the RSF, in actions that took place on Friday and Saturday, are “exclusively civilian, without military presence or activity,” and denounced “the kidnapping of five residents who were taken to an unknown location, the total destruction of the Qurbara market and the looting of properties and livestock.”

For his part, the governor of the Darfur region, Minni Arko Minawi, declared in a statement that “a civilian vehicle was set on fire with all its occupants” in the North Darfur desert by members of the paramilitaries, resulting in the death of all of them in a horrible massacre.”

Minawi explained that the village of Qurbura was “looted and completely burned” by the RSF, insisting that this “behavior reflects the true nature of these groups.”

“How can a ceasefire be established between the RSF and the citizens whom the militia has sworn to exterminate?” the governor asked and assured that “unarmed young people who fled the hell of the attacks fell into another ambush in the desert, where they were tortured and killed.”

So far, the RSF have not reacted to this information.

The RSF control most of the Darfur region, except for the counties of Um Buru, Marnaui, Abu Qamra and Al Tina in the extreme northwest of North Darfur, which are under the control of official forces.

These counties border Chad and are among the last strongholds of the Sudanese Army and the joint forces that support it in the Darfur region, after the RSF and its allied groups extended their control over most of the cities in the region.

These attacks occur after recent paramilitary attacks against Omdurman, neighboring Khartoum, and as the conflict with the Army is escalating with intense fighting in the vicinity of Al Obeid, capital of North Kordofan state.

The conflict in Sudan broke out in April 2023 and has caused the death of some 400,000 people -according to US estimates-, and forced another 14 million to leave their homes, making the African country the scene of the worst displacement and hunger crisis in the world, according to the UN.
