At least three security force members were killed and 15 others injured in a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack on a Pakistan Coast Guard post in the southwestern province of Balochistan, police reported Saturday.

The attack occurred Friday night against the Panwan post, about ten kilometers from Jiwani, in the coastal district of Gwadar, a strategic area due to its deep-water port and its role in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

“A suicide attacker rammed a truck laden with explosives into the Panwan post,” said Gwadar Senior Superintendent of Police, Atta-ur-Rehman,

The official indicated that 18 Pakistani Army and Coast Guard personnel were deployed at the post at the time of the attack.

“Two members of the Pakistan Army and one from the Coast Guard lost their lives in the attack, while 15 personnel were injured,” he added.

The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that the operation was carried out by its Majeed Brigade, the separatist group’s suicide unit.

This is the second suicide attack claimed by the BLA in Balochistan in less than two months.

In late May, a similar VBIED attack against a passenger train in Quetta left more than 50 dead and more than 100 injured, in addition to derailing several cars.

According to Atta-ur-Rehman, the police and other security forces cordoned off the area immediately after the explosion and opened an investigation to collect evidence and identify the facilitators of the attack.

Gwadar is a strategically important city for Pakistan; its deep-water port is preeminent for regional trade and energy routes connecting China, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
